Encaustic is an ancient method of combining bees wax and damar varnish to create hauntingly beautiful translucent paintings. It has resurfaced across the globe with new approaches, visions, and methods. Our focus will be on learning the basic principles of using Encaustic while learning a simple method to express your creative voice using collage. We’ll start by building a base layer on our substrate with expressive mark making and painting techniques. From there we’ll learn how to apply Encaustic medium to create a luminous background. Then, we’ll explore using collage to express ourselves even further. Finally, we’ll learn how to enrich our piece with mark making and glazing. Artist bio: Angie Wimmer began her love of art like most, playing with wax crayons. Eventually she made her way to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to study oil painting, fiber arts, and jewelry arts. She rediscovered working with wax through batik, resist printing and finally encaustics. She is currently working out of her home-based studio which is filled with way too many supplies, a small dachshund named Cyrus, and sometimes a husband Bob who stops by with food.
