NOTES ON SELECTED WORKS
(#1) DEVIL IN THE DEEP. (2025) This is an idea of a giant Kraken in its lair of ships it has sucked down from the surface. It is based on a smaller work I sold I 2017. I wanted to make it bigger. The frame is a 90 year old wood frame that was being thrown out. I went over that with acrylics, and glitter spray and varnish to make it look as if under water itself.
(#19) THE TEMPEST OF THEER (2025) This is an illustration for a project called PROGCORE, a role playing manual, concept by actor Todd Stashwick (STAR TREK PICARD SEASON 3, 12 MONKEYS, and upcoming Marvel Universe TV show VISION QUEST) and David Nett. Todd’s wife Charity is a terrific writer and wrote a story for which I could not resist doing art for.
(#8) DRAGON STORM (1999) This was done for a book called DRAGONHENGE by myself and the Late John Grant writer. Acrylics, it depicts a storm of dragons.
(#22) WAKE OF THE DUTCHMAN (2015).This is based on the legend of The Flying Dutchman, a ghost ship that spells disaster for unfortunate ships that cross its path. Oils on canvas.
(#9) RESOUNDING SEA. (2025) Oils. A sort of made up seascape, sometimes they are the best ones. I just started painting loosely and went crazy with it. I had sold a similar large painting before this and decided to explore these shores more. As I get older I am loosening up more…the eyes ya know?
(#14)MOBY DICK AND THE SEA MONSTER (2011) oils on linen on board. So what DOES MOBY DICK do when he’s not being chased by Captain Ahab? Battles creatures of the deep for supremacy in the sea. I explored the concept of Moby Dick several times and one of my sold paintings wound up on the cover to the classic Herman Melville book. Another, wound up used on the History Network show THE UN-XPLAINED, hosted and produced by William Shatner. Kind of fun to hear Shatner narrate a passage of the book, to my art onscreen, he also gave me a credit!
(#12) THE WHALE GOD (2023). Cover illustration to SRS Video’s BLU Ray release of a 1962 Daiei Pictures, Japan, classic film starring Kojiro Hongo and Takeshi Shimura. A Japanese re-working of MOBY DICK, set in a fishing village and a battle with a terrifying monster whale ( a Right Whale to be specific). The film is black and white so my idea was to paint it monochromatically, greys and blues.
